Preserving your chicken eggs.

I’ve been reading articles and watching Youtube videos on water glassing eggs and thought that I would post some information. Water glassing eggs is not something new and has been around since the 1800s This method uses no electricity and no fancy equipment. The water glassing method was used in the 1800s to preserve eggs using no electricity, All that is needed is a large glass or plastic container that can hold liquids like a gallon glass tea jar or a larger container. I used a large plastic container that used to hold animal crackers from Sam’s club. Simply, all you need to do for the solution is to mix 1 quart of distilled water and 1 weighed ounce of pickling lime( you can buy this in most grocery stores or feed stores) Once you have mixed the solution you are ready to start placing your eggs in it (YOU CAN NOT USE STORE BOUGHT EGGS) As they are washed prior shipping and the bloom is no longer on the eggs. (Just before laying an egg, the hen adds a protective layer called “bloom” to the outside of the egg. This coating seals the shell pores, prevents bacteria from getting inside the shell, and reduces moisture loss from the egg.  These are all things designed to make the egg last longer.) When we collect our eggs each morning we place the clean eggs into the solution making sure that we have about 2 inches of the solution covering the eggs. You can mix more of the pickling lime and distilled water and add to the container if needed or start another container. The dirty ones we wash and use for consumption. This process will keep your eggs usable for up to 1 year or 18 months. Before using the water glassed eggs simply take what you want out of the container to use and wash off the lime solution and cook.
